As students here in British Columbia every year our children are given a day planner sometime during the first few days of school and it's something I've always looked forward to seeing come home. It's extremely well designed and very informative: packed with tips on how to study, school ethics, math tips, how to get ready for a test and so on.

This year it also came with a "Code of Conduct" for the students. This particular code of conduct that was given to our family was developed by Principal Corinne Wester and the Aspen Advisory Committee. I'm not sure if this "code" was only published in our area, or through the entire province, but I sure hope it was published province wide, because I feel it's PERFECT in every way. Hats off to the Principal Wester and every school who published it or something like it. It will certainly help every student start the new year on the right foot.


Code of Conduct

Expectations Of Students

Students will be respectful of self, others and the school environment. Students demonstrate this respect by:

  1. being considerate, thoughtful and kind

  2. being caring and courteous and using good manners in all interactions

  3. caring for school and personal property

  4. arriving on time, prepared to participate fully and appropriately in all classes, playground activities, field trips and extra-curricular  activities

  5. being a positive role model to enhance school culture

  6. using technology responsibly

  7. behaving in a safe manner at all times

  8. being the best learner he/she can be

  9. solving problems in a peaceful manner

  10. acting responsibly at all times, including when not directly supervised by an adult

Taking Responsibility

All student behaviour provides an opportunity for learning.  Students need to be given an opportunity to take responsibility for their own behaviour and to fix their mistakes.

W.I.T.S.

( your school name ) students are asked to use their W.I.T.S. when  solving problems.  

          

Bullying

Bullying is not tolerated at (your school name). Students and parents are encouraged to report cases of bullying to the office. It is unacceptable for students to not report bullying.

Response to Inappropriate and/or Unacceptable Behaviour

When a students action(s) demonstrate non-compliance with our School Code of Conduct careful consideration of appropriate  consequences will occur once the details of the incident have been fully investigated. Depending upon the severity and/or frequency of the inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour one or more of the following may occur:

  1. Official recording of the incident

  2. Restitution to individuals involved

  3. Contact and meeting with the parents/guardians/caregivers

  4. Verbal or written apology

  5. Behaviour reflections completed by student

  6. Performing a `community service` at school

  7. Establishing a `personal behaviour contract` Loss of playground time

  8. Loss of `special privileges`, e.g. Field trips, extra-curricular activities

  9. Referral to School Based Team for intervention

  10. Reimbursement if property loss or damage is involved

  11. In school or out of school suspension, in accordance with district  policy all other avenues will be explored prior to the use of suspension

  12. Progressive discipline may be instituted, further explanation of this  process is available upon request

  13. Actions specified under District policy

Imagine the atmosphere our children could learn and  grow up in if every School in the land adopted and followed this  giving and caring, yet firm "Code of Conduct" policy.
